Hier kommt eine Liste von Dingen, nach denen ich regelmäßig auf eBay und auf Flohmärkten Ausschau halte.

Grundsätzliches zum Kaufen überhaupt (vs. nicht-Kaufen)

Here are some rules of thum that will help you decide whether to call that toll-free number, click the Order Now! button, or check the price on Amazon.

Ask yourself these questions:

1. Where will I put it?
2. How often will I use it a month from now?
3. If I don’t buy it, will I miss it in two weeks?
4. How long will it take me to learn how to use it? (This is a true killer.)
5. How much time will it save me?
6. How much money will it save me?
7. Will it actually work? (Read the two-star testimonials on Amazon.)
8. What else will I be asked to buy? (Something, I promise you.)
9. Do I have the spare time to enjoy it?
We pay with money or time. I prefer to pay with money. I am running out of time.

When I price things in time, I usually don’t buy.

THE SHOPPING LIST

Make a list of things you want to buy. Think this through. Decide to buy what you really want. Then shop for price.

Before you order now, put it on your list. Wait at least a week. Then go back and look at the list. Where should it be on the list?

If you don’t move it up, you probably won’t use it. You can keep it there, but cross off the other items first.

Also, learn how to use each item you buy before buying anything lower on the list. This will reduce your rate of purchases.

Note: this doesn’t apply to books. Buy all the books you want. But buy them used on Amazon.

Buy during the 3rd year of a recession. You will not be able to buy it at bottom price.

That is the problem in every economic crisis. Items people paid a lot for in the boom economy have little demand in the crisis. The fall in price of these goods is sharp, precisely because nobody really needed these goods to begin with. People bought them for show. Then in the crisis, they need money to pay bills, and they’re willing to unload these items dirt cheap.

The problem is this: in the new conditions, there is not much demand for these items. Only if you have a particular desire to own one of them, and you have cash on the barrel head to pay for it, are you going to part with cash to buy the item. You are hoarding cash because you don’t know what is going to happen next. You don’t know if you are going to lose your job. An item that you might have been willing to buy for show purposes during the boom no longer looks that impressive to you. Everybody else feels just about the same.

This is why you need a shopping list now. What are the kinds of items you would like to own on the far side of the recession, but which cost too much today, during the boom? You have to look long term. You have to look to the far side of the recession.

The goal is probably not to buy low and sell high. The goal is to buy low and keep. You should buy items that you are confident that you will use a decade from now or two decades from now.

A recession is a great time to buy investment real estate. A recession is a great time to buy stocks. But people usually don’t think about durable consumer goods that are expensive during the boom, and which become cheap in the tail end of a recession. They don’t think about the items they would like to have a decade from now or two decades from now. They don’t think long-term.

This is why there are bargains for long-term durable goods in the final year of a recession. People hold onto these items, and then they finally give up. But by the time they give up, fear is so widespread in the economy that nobody wants to part with hard-earned cash to buy the item. This is when Ebay is going to be filled with really good deals.

If you ever wanted to buy the car of your dreams at age 18, year three of the recession will be the time to do it. You’ll be able to buy a really nice one, and you will not pay a lot of money.

“Put your money where your time is.”
That’s the rule. Don’t break it.

When you look at how much time you spend sleeping, commuting to and from work, and at work, you find how little spare time you have. You should make certain that you maximize the return on your spare time, either in terms of consumer goods or production goods.

For most people, eight hours of sleep is vital. The number-one consumer good that everybody should buy is a comfortable bed. Beds are getting cheaper because of Internet sales. You can buy a really good queen-size bed for about $1000. I see no reason for anybody not to have the best bed he can afford. If you have a bed that doesn’t give you a good night of sleep, buy a new bed. If that one doesn’t give you good night sleep, send it back, and order another one. The beds are now available on a trial basis. I see no reason at all why anybody should sleep on a bed that is not perfect for him or her.

For some people, television viewing is the next biggest time expenditure. Honor the same principle. Buy a large screen TV and at least a $500 sound system. The sound system will make a huge difference in terms of enjoyment. The younger you are, the truer this is. Men’s hearing begins to malfunction about the age of 30.

In the case of both of these consumer expenditures, the price of buying really high quality goods has continued to decline. It literally costs about 50% less to buy a good bed today compared with 20 years ago. As for televisions and sound equipment, there is no comparison. Digital improvements have been spectacular. Speakers still cost a lot, but everything else has declined in price.

If you use a smart phone a lot, buy a good one. What do you use it for most of the time? Buy a model that offers this. If you take lots of pictures, buy Google’s Pixel. Pay $1,000. Or buy a cheaper phone and buy a high quality pocket camera. Sharp pictures are worth a lot. Pay for a good pocket camera that you will actually use.

Pay for good reading lights and a comfortable reading chair. The more reading you do, the more money you should spend on your chair. If you read standing up, that’s a different matter. There is a good case for standing up when you read. You are far less likely to get drowsy. Use a stand-up desk. Take notes standing up.

Depending on where you live, the next major expense is an air-conditioning system. You want to be comfortable in the summer. Spend whatever it costs to let you attain this goal. Your working efficiency will improve for anything you bring home from the office.

If a woman cooks a lot, she should have the best stove she knows how to use.

A really good toilet costs about $400 installed. It may cost a little more, but not much more. Buy a really good toilet for every bathroom. Even if you rent, buy a good toilet if the landlord allows it.

One of the reasons for buying a home is that you will be more likely to make the expenditures necessary to make your home into a castle. You won’t want to make the expenditures if you are not an owner.

Most people do not spend a lot of time in their back yards. If your children do, make sure they have a good quality swing set.

The less time you spend doing something on a daily basis, the less money you should spend in that area of your life. Put first things first. Let your time budget tell you which things these are.

Bücher nehme ich nur noch als eBooks. Bevor ich ein Papierbuch lese warte ich lieber ein paar Jahre, bis es als eBook erhältlich ist. Oder es bleibt halt ungelesen.

The Top Dozen Books on Austrian Economics

This was posted yesterday on a forum. It begins with one of my observations on what I must re-read before I finish writing the manuscript of my projected magnum opus, Christian Economics: Scholar’s Edition.

“Then I will have to re-read the basics of Austrian economics. There are at least a dozen major books.”

Predictable question! What are they?

The list begins with books that are easier to read. The list gets progressively more rigorous.

1. What Has Government Done to Our Money? (1964), by Murray Rothbard. This is an easy to read book. It is short: a long article. It introduces a crucial topic, one which is central to Austrian school economics: money. Rothbard’s presentation sets forth his view of how central banking has undermined reliable, predictable money.

2. The Case for a 100% Gold Dollar (1962), by Rothbard. This extends his discussion in the first book. It is another long article.

3. Mises on Money (2012), by Gary North. This presents the main ideas of the Austrian theory of the business cycle, as first presented by Mises.

4. America’s Great Depression (1963), by Rothbard. This book presents the case against the Federal Reserve in the 1920’s and against Herbert Hoover’s interventions, 1930-33.

5. Bureaucracy (1944), by Ludwig von Mises. This short book shows the differences between profit management (free market) and bureaucracy (state). It is about 130 pages. It is easy to read. It shows why business techniques of efficiency are useless for reforming government. The funding is different.

6. The Road to Serfdom (1944), by F. A. Hayek. This is the most widely known book from an Austrian standpoint. It was a best-seller. It presents the case against government intervention in the name of liberty, not efficiency. Chapter 10 is great: “Why the Worst Get on Top.”

7. Economic Calculation in the Socialist Commonwealth (1920), by Mises. This short book converted a generation of young socialists to the free market. Hayek was one of them. Mises showed how socialism is inherently irrational, for it has no rational pricing system.

8. Socialism (1922), by Mises. This extended his discussion in the previous book. It is the classic book ever written against all forms of socialism.

9. Human Action (1949), by Mises. This is his magnum opus. This was the first book to defend free market economic theory consistently in every area of the economy that is governed by the price system. It is comprehensive as no previous economics book had been.

10. Man, Economy, and State (1962), by Rothbard. This presents Human Action with the paraphernalia of college-level economics. It has lots of graphs. It has lots of footnotes. It is well organized. It is clear, as Rothbard’s books always are.

11. Economic Logic (3rd ed.), by Mark Skousen. This is an Economics 1 college textbook. It covers the basics. If you ever have to take a beginning course in economics, read this book in the month before you enroll.

12. Individualism and Economic Order (1948), by Hayek. This is a collection of his articles. The key article is Chapter 4 on decentralized economic knowledge.

Not for the fainthearted:

13. Market Theory and the Price System (1963), by Israel Kirzner. This is an upper division college textbook in price theory. It is tough slogging. It went out of print half a century ago. He never revised it. He later abandoned all traces of the #1 methodological tool of analysis of all such textbooks: equilibrium. The idea of equilibrium is based on a hypothetical and inherently misleading assumption, perfect foreknowledge. Far better is this book:

14. Competition and Entrepreneurship (1973), by Kirzner. He made his academic reputation with this book. It distinguishes between risk and uncertainty, a distinction that goes back to Frank Knight’s greatest book, Risk, Uncertainty, and Profit (1921). Mises favorably cited Knight’s book in Human Action. Kirzner’s book undermines all of the graphs in Market Theory and the Price System. Textbook graphs assume equilibrium. There is no better book refuting equilibrium than Competition and Entrepreneurship. There is not one graph and not one mathematical formula in the book.

Most of these books are available from the Mises Institute, either as printed books or as free PDF’s. Skim each one online. If you like it, order a printed version. Then read it, pencil or highlighter in hand.

Great American Movies Gary North – August 11, 2017 I teach the high school literature courses for the Ron Paul Curriculum. I produced 720 lessons. Most of them have a 25-minute video lecture. Because of copyright laws, anything after 1922 in the United States is under legal protection, at least of the copyright was renewed 28 years after the first date of release. Anything published after 1963 is automatically protected: 75 years after the death of the author. Hence, if I taught the course using any book published after 1922, the student would have to buy it. This shaped my decision to assign movies instead. Here is what I wrote. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Week 25 At this point, I deviate from the standard course in American literature. I abandon the printed word. The reason is clear: Western culture has moved from the printed word to film, beginning after 1927: the “talkies.” The public has made this decision. Movies convey stories in bite-size chunks: bites of popcorn – literal and figurative. Fiction that does not make it onto the screen has little cultural influence. There are exceptions. J. D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye is the main one. But if we want to understand how modern civilization works, we must understand the movies. Hollywood has spent the money to hire the best writers of fiction. Also, comedy is rare in printed form. Site gags are seen. Laughter is crowd-based: theaters. Unlike most major cultural transformations in history, we can date this one easily: 1927: The Jazz Singer. By 1930, the transition was visible. Then came the year of artistic dominance: 1939. It began with the most beloved movie in American history, Gone with the Wind. America has dominated world literature ever since 1939. The world wants Americans to tell it stories, especially if things go “boom” a lot. Television has intensified this dominance. The mark of this shift in influence is the response of anyone who grew up watching classic movies. “But you left out. . . .” There will not be an equally assertive reaction from literate people regarding books left out.

The film ends with Giacinto living in a newly built exceedingly crowded shack with both his mistress and his wife, together with an apparently reconciliated family and the newcomers as well. Warum will man so etwas anschauen? Thematisch ist das nach dem Inhalt wohl ein sehr schlechter Film, wurde aber wärmstens empfohlen von einem Bekannten.
